‘Castle’: Molly Quinn Previews ‘Bittersweet’ Finale and Season 6 Hopes

After Alexis’ traumatic experience earlier this season, the actress who portrays Castle’s daughter tells THR that “she’s kind of turning into a daredevil.”

The future of Beckett and Castle’s relationship is in danger.

Fresh off Castle’s renewal news, season five wraps up with the ABC procedural, starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic, forcing its two lead characters to make a big decision. Beckett is faced with a job offer she is seriously mulling, which would put her in Washington D.C. and threatens her romantic future with Castle.

“It’s bittersweet,” actress Molly Quinn, who plays Castle’s daughter Alexis, tells The Hollywood Reporter of Monday’s season finale. “It gets to a point where Castle wants one thing and Beckett wants another, and if they can they work it out or not.”

In a chat with THR, Quinn discusses Alexis’ newfound “daredevil” streak, how her near-death experience has changed the character and what the future holds for the Castle-Beckett romance.

The Hollywood Reporter: What should we expect for Alexis in the season finale?

Molly Quinn: Alexis is trying to convince her dad that it is OK for her to take a trip to Costa Rica and her dad, of course, is very uncomfortable with that considering what happened to her earlier this season with her being kidnapped and everything. Alexis is trying to reassert her independence because after that whole experience, her dad is much more overprotective. I mean, Alexis was still shocked — she would be after that traumatic situation — but now she’s like, “Hmm, this isn’t good. I can’t let him think that we’re reverting back to being 14. I’m 19, going on 20, I need to take this trip because I can’t let my fears conquer me.”

Nathan Fillion of ‘Castle’ thanks cast, crew at 100th episode celebration

The cast members of “Castle” have a big reason to celebrate.

The ABC comedy drama’s cast, which includes stars Nathon Fillion and Stana Katic, on Wednesday celebrated their upcoming 100th episode (which airs on Monday, April 1 at 10 p.m. ET) with champagne and a very clever cake.

The show’s star, Fillion, took some time to thank his fellow cast members for the journey they’ve endured thus far.

“If you know me, and you guys do know me, you know that I don’t like to learn anything,” he said at the celebration. “But despite my best efforts I have learned in 100 episodes how much I rely – how heavily I rely – on all of you.”

“When people tell me, and they do, that they love this show I don’t think of the polished piece that we see on TV, I think about the hours we pull, freezing outside, the laughs, hanging out,” he continued. “I appreciate you all, and I look forward to coming to work and being with you all, all the time.”

The series, which is currently in its fifth season, debuted in 2009 and follows a successful mystery novelist, Rick Castle (Fillion), who gets permission from the Mayor of New York City to tag along with an NYPD homicide investigation team for research purposes. Katic portrays Detective Kate Beckett, who over the seasons has developed a romantic relationship with Castle.

The air date of the 100th episode is also Castle’s birthday — April Fool’s Day.

Holy cow last night’s episode was INTENSE! Molly was AMAZING and I am so incredibly excited to see how this turns out. The #SaveAlexis tag was busy last night and had some of the most interesting tweets popping up.

Who knew? Barbra Streisand is such a fan of Castle (and is pals with one of the producers) that she persuaded husband James Brolin to appear on the ABC crime drama. He plays the long-lost father of Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) in the February 25 episode, the second hour of a nail-biting two-parter that begins February 18. Executive producer Andrew Marlowe is keeping details secret but says, “There will be a moment between father and son when Castle comes to a realization and the two men confront the realities of their relationship.”

The emotional episodes also showcase young Molly Quinn, whose character, Alexis, gets kidnapped. “She tries to escape any way she can but keeps getting thwarted,” Quinn says. “Near the end, Alexis kind of falls apart.”

Marlowe says Fillion lets the tears flow as he portrays the powerless dad who fears for his child’s life. “We’re giving Nathan the opportunity to show some colors and tackle a range of emotions he doesn’t always get to show,” says Marlowe, hinting that Castle’s father figures into the kidnapping “in a very interesting way. He has a strong hand in how everything gets resolved.”

Superman Unbound, based on Geoff Johns’ 2008 Action Comics story arc, finds the Man of Steel squaring off against the planet-destroying alien machine, Brainiac, while balancing his responsibilities to Lois Lane and cousin Kara (Supergirl). The voice cast includes White Collar’s Matt Bomer as Superman, Fringe’s John Noble as Brainiac and Castle’s Stana Katic and Molly Quinn as Lois and Kara, respectively.

Superman Unbound will release on Blu-ray, DVD and later this year.
